Our History
The history of our congregation starts with God’s work over 125 years ago. In March of 1894, a small group of Christians from the Warriors Mark Church of the Brethren began meeting in Bellwood in a rented storefront on Tuckahoe Street. The new assembly began to grow, and they soon needed more space, so a building was built and dedicated at the end of 1895. The Lord multiplied the six original members to over 60, and the congregation formally organized as the Bellwood Church of the Brethren in the spring of 1897.
Over the next century, God continued to bring people into this local assembly. To accommodate, the building was enlarged and modified over the years. Today we’re blessed with a beautiful worship space, room for classes and fellowship meals, along with a lift that makes both floors accessible to all.
More recently, the church has undergone spiritual, theological and structural reformation. Beginning in 2016, we began a year long process of studying the marks of a healthy church and taking a serious and honest look at the status of the local congregation. The members had a desire to look to Scripture to carefully and faithfully rebuild the church based on Biblical truths. After much prayer and deliberation, the congregation voted to withdraw from the Church of the Brethren over concerns that as a denomination it no longer consistently upheld Biblical teaching. In May of 2017, we adopted new bylaws, church covenant, and a new name that reflects the church’s commitment to reformed theology: Covenant Community Church of Bellwood. Seeking to cooperate with other churches for the work of the gospel, we elected to affiliate with the Southern Baptist Convention later that year.
Since that time, the leaders of the church have been working to encourage and build up the congregation, especially through the teaching and preaching of the Bible. Many dedicated members of the church work together, serving in different ways to help others worship and grow spiritually. We gather for worship Sunday morning and evening, and have Sunday School classes, Wednesday morning and evening Bible studies. Today, at Covenant Community Church we are congregation unified in the gospel of Jesus with the desire that God alone would be glorified in all things.
